The ASL faculty dedicated team of teachers and learning support assistants is led by Gretchen Perk. We use a pupil centred approach and work in close partnership with parents, mainstream colleagues, guidance staff, community staff (Pupil Support Worker, Youth Workers, CLD Workers) as well as social work and health professionals.

We aim to meet the full range of needs that individual learners may have: social, emotional and health needs, as well as learning needs.
These needs may be met in different contexts such as in class support, small group work and targeted sessions within our Enhanced Provision facility.
In our Community Resource Hub, we support pupils with profound, severe and complex needs. We aim to work with these pupils to enhance aspects of their life: communication, cognition, life and independence skills as well as physical skills.
Pupils are taught study skills and are directed to develop strategies to improve their social and emotional competence. We encourage our pupils’ growth in skills for learning, skills for employment and skills for life through rich learning experiences that aim to maximise their potential in a safe and structured environment.
Courses taught within our department include RME at National 3 level, English for Speakers of Other Languages at National 3 level and up to Higher alongside ASDAN and Caledonian Award courses for those pupils who require additional qualifications at a level suited to their needs.
Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in a gardening club at lunchtime.
If required, the department can organise Alternative Arrangements for pupils according to SQA guidelines; for the final exams, this involves strict procedures and the production of up to date evidence in conjunction with class teachers.
